Our Day Trip To Ses Illetes Beach Formentera

Often named one of the world's best beaches, Playa de Ses Illetes on Fomentera island lives up to it's reputation. This Balearic beach wouldn't be out of place in the Caribbean, with white powdery sand and crystal clear green water. It's no wonder that tourists flock to this island near Ibiza for a taste of paradise.

Getting To Ses Illetes

We visited Fomentera while staying in Ibiza in August, which is the height of high season in this part of the world. We escaped the party island for a day trip, by taking the ferry boat from the port at Ibiza Old Town which goes to Formentera in around 30 minutes. The trip wasn't all that cheap, 45 euros each return, but it was worth it to experience the beauty of Formentera (for tips on renting your own boat while staying in Ibiza click here).

When we arrived at Fomentera, we found a bus that was going straight to Ses Illetes beach, which took around 15 minutes to get there. It was an extremely hot day, around 36 degrees centigrade so by the time we got to the beach we were desperate to find some shade.

On Arrival

The beach was busy, and I mean very busy! It has a narrow strip of sand which was full with tourists, but we managed to find a small spot to relax. Fortunately we got the last umbrella for rent on the beach, and laid down our towels in the shade on beautifully soft, white sand. I honestly don't enjoy beaches that are as crowded as this, so I'd recommend visiting in the off season if you can.

The Food

It was hard to find food on the beach but we managed to pick up some pizzas at a nearby restaurant. The pizzas were expensive and not all that tasty but we were starving so we didn't really notice. You'll probably want to bring food and drinks with you since there isn't a huge selection of places to buy refreshments.

The Water

We spent a lot of time swimming because the water was so perfect - dead still and crystal clear! Here are some of our shots from the water...

The Verdict

If you have days to spare in The Balearics it's worth giving Fomentera a visit, but if you're pushed for time there are also plenty of beautiful beaches in Ibiza to check out. Overall we'd say Ses Illetes is a stunning location that is perfect for an island hopping beach day. Click here for more luxury travel ideas.
